About our Farm
Welcome to the home of Rise & Root Farm! We are reaching for the stars and digging deep into the soil. We welcome you to join us on this journey.
We are a cooperatively run farm in the black dirt region of Orange County, New York. Our farm team is made of strong women, teachers, leaders, students, and growers. We grow vegetables, flowers, and herbs using sustainable growing techniques – we never use chemical pesticides or herbicides on our farm. Instead, we focus on building up a healthy ecosystem and restoring balance to the land.
We hope Rise & Root Farm will be a call to action for many people. Each of us has individually dedicated a good part of our lives to encouraging others to grow food. We hope that our farm will continue to inspire folks to do that. We want to share our journey – where we find joy, where we stumble, how we grow. We hope that you’ll join us as we grow.

Rise & Root Farm is a 3-acre vegetable farm at the Chester Agricultural Center. We plan to grow our operation to 25 acres over the next few years. We are run cooperatively by an all-star team of four veteran urban farmers and community activists: Lorrie Clevenger, Jane Hodge, Karen Washington, and Michaela Hayes. Based in New York City and Chester, NY, these talented women are connected by their passion for food, food justice, hands-on education, and farming.
